LARRY CALLAHAN
After leaving high school in 1965, Larry Callahan joined the Marine Corp and served thirteen months in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corp in 1968, he enrolled at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi, to take advantage of the GI Bill. He graduated from J.C.J.C. in 1970, and applied to go to work for the U.S. Secret Service Uniform Division and was accepted to their academy.
Following graduation from the Secret Service Academy, Larry was assigned to protection duty. After serving two years in protection duty, he requested to work at the Secret Service Academy as an instructor and trained Treasury agents, Customs agents, and U.S. Air marshals in the use of firearms.
Later Larry made the decision to return to college and finish his degree in Marketing Education before he lost his remaining GI Bill education money. During his second semester enrollment at Mississippi State University, Larry signed up for the R.O.T.C.
After graduation in 1975, Larry began his active duty obligation at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, in the Armor School followed by Flight School at Ft. Rucker, Alabama. Larry married his wife Mary Carol at Ft Rucker, and after graduation from flight school, they were stationed in Germany, where he served as an attack helicopter platoon section leader. After rotating back to the U.S., their son Edward was born. In 1981 Larry continued his military career by joining the Mississippi National Guard. He first served as a platoon leader in a heavy lift transportation company. In 1987 he became an Aviation Maintenance Officer in the 184th Transportation Brigade. Later he served as the Military Intelligence Officer for the 114th ASG in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In 1998 Larry transferred to the U. S. Army Reserve as the Aviation Division Chief of the 377th TSC in New Orleans, Louisiana. In November 2002 he retired from the Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
In 1987 Larry entered the teaching field. Since the Marine Corp, he had always been involved with teaching or training or instructing people in some way. In 1995 he completed his Masters Degree in Administration at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In May of 2006, he retired from his position as a school administrator in the West Jasper County School District in Mississippi. Since retirement, Larry has been volunteering to serve as a member of the board of directors at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Laurel, Mississippi.
