USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL ♦ On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese attack on US military forces at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii propelled America into World War II. ♦ During this attack, the USS ARIZONA, a Pennsylvania Class battleship, was sunk, killing 1,177 sailors & Marines. ♦ In 1962, a monument to these brave men was created over the sunken remains of the ship. |
USS ARIZONA RELICS PROGRAM ♦ Initiated by an act of Congress in 1995, the US Navy began the USS ARIZONA RELICS PROGRAM, allowing only qualified organizations to possess a piece of the USS Arizona. ♦ In 2006, the VMM became a recipient of a piece of the ship's superstructure. ♦ The VMM is one of a very limited number of organizations who have been granted the right to display a piece of the U.S.S. Arizona. |

U.S.S. Arizona Relic & Pearl Harbor
♦ The total of 1,177 lost sailors and Marines account for over 1/2 of the total number of casualties sustained during the Pearl Harbor attack.
♦ It is estimated that 335 Sailors and Marines survived the attack. Survivors of the USS Arizona have the option to be interred with their shipmates upon their passing. ♦ Since 1982, the U.S. Navy has allowed survivors of USS Arizona to be interred in the ship’s wreckage upon their deaths. ♦ Following a full military funeral at the Arizona memorial, the cremated remains are placed in an urn and then deposited by divers beneath one of the Arizona’s gun turrets. ♦ This ritual came to a conclusion in December 2019 when the 44th and final crew member requesting this ceremony was laid to rest in this manner. The 3 remaining survivors have all stated that they wish to be buried with their families. |
