USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL
♦ On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese attack on US military forces at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii propelled
America into World War II.

♦ During this attack, the USS ARIZONA, a Pennsylvania Class battleship, was sunk, killing 1,177 sailors & Marines.

♦ In 1962, a monument to these brave men was created over the sunken remains of the ship.
USS ARIZONA RELICS PROGRAM
♦ Initiated by an act of Congress in 1995, the US Navy
began the USS ARIZONA RELICS PROGRAM, allowing only  qualified organizations to possess a piece of the USS Arizona.

♦ In 2006, the VMM became a recipient of a
piece of the ship's superstructure.

♦  The VMM is one of a very limited number of
organizations who have been granted the
right to display a piece of the U.S.S. Arizona.

♦ The total of 1,177 lost sailors and Marines account for over 1/2 of the total number of casualties sustained during the  Pearl Harbor attack.

♦ It is estimated that 335 Sailors and Marines survived the attack. Survivors of the USS Arizona have the option to be interred with their shipmates upon their passing.

♦ Since 1982, the U.S. Navy has allowed survivors of USS Arizona to be interred in the ship’s wreckage upon their deaths.

♦ Following a full military funeral at the Arizona memorial, the cremated remains are placed in an urn and then deposited by divers beneath one of the Arizona’s gun turrets.

♦ This ritual came to a conclusion in December 2019 when the 44th and final crew member requesting this ceremony was laid to rest in this manner. The 3 remaining survivors have all stated that they wish to be buried with their families.
